Wanting a Birkin and being able to pay for one is not the same as being offered one. Three things stand between a person and a bag worth owning, and each of them is a full-time job.
Being offered one
The houses decide who gets the bags that matter. Forbes reports that a customer has to be personally invited by a sales associate to be offered a Birkin, and that the invitation often does not come until they have spent thousands on other things from the house. Sotheby’s adds that even then a client may buy two of the most wanted bags a year. Arriving with the money is not the start of the conversation.
Knowing what it is worth
Then you have to know what a bag is worth. Every Birkin is made by hand by a single artisan over at least eighteen hours, and no two leave in quite the same condition. Two bags of the same model and year can sit thousands apart on leather, hardware and wear, and there are enough convincing fakes in circulation that authentication is a profession rather than a glance.
Selling it well
A bag is only worth what someone will actually pay for it. Selling one for close to that means reaching buyers who trust the seller, photographing it properly, pricing it against what the same bag has really fetched, and holding your nerve through the offers. That takes years to build, and it does not open to a private individual with one bag to sell.
This is the part that keeps most people out, and it is the part membership is for. Our partner already has the bags, the appraisers and the buyers. You choose the bag, it becomes yours, and they do the rest.
