Inside the $40 billion luxury resale boom

Research and Markets values luxury resale at $36.79B in 2024 and $40.11B in 2025. A joint BCG and Vestiaire Collective study, based on nearly 8,000 consumers, found that secondhand fashion and luxury is now growing roughly three times faster than new.

Rebag’s 2025 Clair Report, one of the most-cited data sets in the category, attributes part of the surge to 2025’s global tariff shifts, which pushed new handbag, watch, and jewelry prices up and sent more buyers to resale in search of access and value.

Who is actually driving the growth

  • Millennials and Gen Z now treat pre-owned luxury as a default, not a compromise (BCG / Vestiaire).
  • Under-30 buyers are arriving through TikTok Shop, Whatnot livestreams, and short-form video (Bloomberg, Business Insider).
  • Post-tariff, buyers of new luxury are turning to resale to sidestep 2025’s price rises (Rebag Clair 2025).
  • Buyers with resale in mind are treating Birkins, Kellys, Classic Flaps, and select Miu Miu and The Row bags as the ones to own (WWD on the Clair report).

The houses winning in resale

According to WWD’s reporting on Rebag’s 2025 Clair Report, three houses defined the year in resale: Hermès (unshakeable at the top), The Row (breakout demand), and Miu Miu (Gen-Z-driven cultural momentum). Chanel remains the foundation for buyers counting on repeated retail rises to lift what their bag fetches.

Secondhand fashion and luxury is growing three times faster than new.

Why the numbers matter for buyers

Category growth is not just an interesting statistic. It is the depth of the door you leave by. Forty billion dollars already flowing through resale means real buyers, real bids, and a real time to sale. That is what separates a bag you can sell when you choose from a collector’s curiosity, and it is why careful buyers now take designer handbags seriously.
